Areolar Sparing Reconstruction
This patient developed left breast cancer. She ultimately desired enlargement of the breasts as well as reduction in the size of her nipple-areolar complex. She underwent bilateral areolar-sparing mastectomies via horizontal incisions that removed the projecting part of her nipple for improved cancer clearance as well as reducing the size of her larger areolas. Dr. Geiger performed immediate reconstruction by first placing prepectoral tissue expanders and alloderm on top of her muscles. This was later exchanged for shaped highly cohesive (gummy bear) silicone implants giving her a much more full but natural appearance. Her remaining areolar tissue allows her to feel whole again without worrying about a nipple protruding through her clothing.
