Complex Chest, Abdomen, & Pelvic Reconstruction

This patient underwent heart bypass surgery. Unfortunately he developed an infection in the sternal bone requiring removal. This left a large open wound and exposure of his heart. Dr. Geiger reconstructed the area by moving his chest wall and abdominal muscles (pectoralis major & rectus abdominis) to cover and protect the heart, as well as bring in good blood supply to help fight infection. His surrounding tissues were then advanced to cover everything with healthy skin. Here he is 3 weeks and 1 year after surgery doing great. He has minimal decline in strength, no loss of function, and has resumed a normal lifestyle.
