What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that focuses on enhancing the size, shape, and appearance of the breasts using breast implants. The procedure is often performed to help women who are unhappy with the smaller size of their breasts but is also commonly performed to restore volume to the breasts that was lost as a result of aging or pregnancy.

Choosing the Right Breast Implant

Breast implants come in a variety of types, shapes, and sizes. The goal is to find the implant that can provide you with your ideal results. During your consultation, our plastic surgeons will ask you what your goals are so that they can determine which type and size is right for you. Different types of incisions can be used to insert the implants into the breasts. Our surgeons will go over the options available to you and will let you know which one is best for you.

The Procedure

Our plastic surgeons will provide you with a list of instructions before your surgery including which medications to avoid. Breast augmentation is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes around one hour to complete.

During the breast procedure, a small incision will be made around the bottom of the areola or at the natural crease at the bottom of the breast. Our surgeons will carefully create a pocket in the breast tissue where the implant can be placed. A sizer will be temporarily placed in the breasts to ensure they are the desired size & symmetrical. The spacer will then be removed, and the implant will be inserted and positioned. The incision will then be closed using absorbable sutures and skin glue to ensure it is properly sealed.

The Recovery Process

You will be able to return home on the same day as your procedure. Most patients experience some soreness, tenderness, and discomfort during the first few days of their recovery. However, you should be able to eat and shower without issue. A post-operative bra will need to be worn during this time to provide support and to ensure the implants heal in the correct position.

Most patients will need to take around three to five days off from work and other daily activities to properly heal. It is also recommended that you avoid lifting anything over five pounds during the first week of your recovery. Light exercise can be resumed after two weeks of recovery. After six weeks, you can resume all normal activities.
